While the primary focus of this survey was to assess the obstacles that impede effective interventions for pediatric septic shock found in non-pediatric emergency departments 75% of emergency physicians surveyed indicated they are only ‘slightly’ comfortable with pediatrics in general, and 90% indicated they lack knowledge about pediatric sepsis. Physicians frequently commented that “symptoms displayed by children are so subtle that sepsis and septic shock are often missed”. 100% of emergency physicians and nurses surveyed indicated that they desire additional pediatric education.
